Just Stay Curious? "Stay curious" is the answer many senior consultants give when asked how they have lasted twenty years in SAP. A more useful question to ask is: what did these people actually do each day, that a consultant with five years' experience and a stale skillset did not do? The answer breaks down into a set of habits which can be copied. Consider two consultants holding identical S/4HANA certificates dated 2020. One has since worked a live cutover; the other has renewed nothing since the exam. Both are qualified, but a client or a hiring manager recognises the difference between them within minutes of starting a conversation, and the 2027/2030 deadline for ECC's mainstream maintenance has made that distinction far more relevant to today’s SAP consulting talent market. What Repeated Transitions Teach Us SAP has put its consultants through this roughly every decade: R/3 gave way to ECC, ECC is giving way to S/4HANA, and SAP's newly unveiled 'Autonomous Enterprise' vision, layering AI agents and unified data across the existing core, shows the pattern of change isn't finished. Each change has demanded a real reframing of what it means to be a SAP consultant, and the gap between changes has been shrinking, which means anyone who treats a platform transition as a single learning exercise rather than a recurring event, gets increasingly irrelevant over the course of a career unless they allocate regular time to understanding how the technology changes, and how their work practices need to change along with it. Plenty of consultants who built solid careers through the ECC years never made the jump into S/4HANA delivery. Most didn't leave the industry outright; ECC experience is still a valuable skill, but their CVs simply stopped describing anything new, project after project, until clients stopped calling quite so often. The practitioners still active today, three platforms into their careers, treated the first transition as another step in a sequence of technological evolution, and built a standing habit around that expectation. The Mechanics of Technical Currency What that habit consists of in 2026 is a set of repeatable behaviours that are achievable in small chunks. Some of that requires engagement with SAP’s own learning resources, and some requires consultants to develop “non-SAP” skills for SAP consulting. SAP retired the old model of certification as a permanent credential back in 2024, moving every certification to a twelve-month validity period with a mandatory renewal assessment. This year it went further: certification exams across SAP's portfolio completed their move to a performance-based, open-book format by the end of March, testing whether a candidate can complete a task inside a live system rather than recall a fact from a manual. A candidate can now consult the SAP Help Portal and SAP Community mid-exam, which tells you what SAP thinks a competent consultant actually needs to demonstrate under pressure: the ability to work a real problem with reference material open, the way every consultant actually works, rather than recall a fact from memory against a clock. A current certificate is therefore a floor, not proof of currency by itself, since anyone can pass a renewal assessment without having touched a client system in months. The consultants worth hiring pair that renewal discipline with personal professional (and anonymised) documentation of project contributions, and also something else SAP provides: the product roadmap explorer, checked on a fixed schedule, and the Learning Hub's structured Learning Journeys, worked through incrementally when project schedules allow, and as new releases land. Engineering Exposure Before It's Required Reading about a capability and having used it are different experiences, and the gap between them becomes apparent quickly in a client meeting. Consultants who stay technically sharp tend to choose their next project partly for the gap it closes, and that choice gets harder to make the further someone climbs in seniority, since senior roles carry more pressure to deliver known quantities than to stretch into unfamiliar ones. This is not always possible with each new role and between roles so consultants find additional ways to acquire experience. The cheapest way to close a gap without waiting for a client to fund it is SAP's own Business Technology Platform trial account, which gives ninety days of hands-on access to a real sandbox environment at no cost, long enough to build something small in an area a consultant has only read about. The tension nobody points out is that this kind of practice is unbilled, and a consultant chasing utilisation targets has every incentive to skip it in favour of chargeable work. The consultants who stay current treat a fixed slice of their working week as protected for exactly this purpose of professional development, the same way they would protect time for a client deliverable, because the alternative is arriving at the next clean-core conversation without sufficiently detailed knowledge of the task at hand. Reading the Field There is a less obvious resource available: tracking which questions are actually being asked in SAP Community's Q&A threads this month, as distinct from what SAP's own announcements say practitioners should care about. Question volume moves on a separate timeline to official messaging because it reflects what people are stuck on in real projects rather than what a product team wants to promote at a keynote. A consultant who scans that traffic on a monthly basis gets an early indication of where the field's attention is shifting, before it becomes a recurring feature in a client's requirements document. Attending TechEd or a regional user group event like DSAG or UKISUG adds a second layer to this, but the consultants who get the most out of those events are usually the ones presenting a session or answering questions from the floor, not the ones sitting quietly through someone else's slides. Developing a unique set of insights and sharing them, and then answering a question in public forces a level of precision that stays with someone for the long-term. The Skills That Never Expire Alongside every technical upskilling exercise sits a set of skills that never went out of date across R/3, ECC, or S/4HANA. As AI absorbs more of the routine configuration and delivery work, what's left for a consultant to do is precisely what a language model can't manage: sit in a room with a finance director who doesn't yet know what she needs, and turn a vague complaint about month-end closing into a scoped, buildable requirement. That skill, the development of actionable business requirements, has nothing to do with which SAP release sits on the client's server. Neither does the ability to walk through a client's order-to-cash or procure-to-pay process from memory, independent of which module currently supports it: which is a form of expertise that is not changed by a version upgrade. Facilitation belongs on the same list: running a workshop so that ten stakeholders leave the room agreeing on something, rather than merely having attended it. So does negotiation, the skill that decides whether a scope change becomes a fight or a signed change order, and change management, since getting a large user base to actually adopt a new Fiori app is a harder problem than building the app. Consultants who describe themselves as "hybrid" have usually just noticed this earlier than everyone else; they pair whatever technical depth they hold with enough business fluency to explain, in a boardroom, why the technology is relevant to their business aspirations. Judgment Beneath the skills that never expire is something harder to name and harder still to teach: judgment, built from years of watching which decisions actually worked and which only looked right on paper. Every consulting career eventually runs into a client who wants to fix a symptom rather than a cause: for example, replacing a report that's producing wrong numbers instead of asking why the underlying data model produces them in the first place. Recognising the difference, and having the standing to say so out loud, takes longer to cultivate than any certification. The same judgment is revealed when weighing a standard SAP process against a custom build, or judging whether a capability SAP is promoting at a keynote is worth investing in, or simply this year's marketing push. Experienced practitioners have learned to treat SAP's own announcements with the same scrutiny they'd apply to any vendor's, which is a harder habit to hold onto than it sounds when your own livelihood depends on that vendor's ecosystem. Documentation discipline belongs in this category too, oddly enough: a consultant who writes down why a decision was made, not just what was decided, is building a resource that outlives the project and often outlives their own memory of it. That kind of judgment can be seen in the difference between a consultant with fifteen years of real experience and one who has repeated their first year fifteen times, and clients who have been burned once can usually tell the two apart within a single meeting. What the Market Reads as Currency All of this eventually has to be visible somewhere a client or a recruiter can actually see it, and most CVs do a poor job of showing it. A CV that leads with a module name and a decade on ECC can be interpreted as a career that stopped moving, without additional details. Experienced recruiters look for different signs: the scale of the programmes listed, whether a named project sponsor or programme director is someone a hiring manager could plausibly call, and whether a client brought the same consultant back for a second and third engagement. That last feature, repeat business, is the clearest sign available that a consultant delivered something worth paying for again. The consultants best placed for the next few years are doing something specific with their diversification, too: they're building outward into data and SAP's Business Technology Platform instead of deepening a single functional module further: becoming the person a project turns to when a question crosses the line between functional configuration and technical extension. With the 2027 deadline for ECC's mainstream maintenance now within most transformation programmes' planning horizon, that combination of current technical grounding paired with demonstrable breadth, is what is commanding the higher salaries well beyond certification count on its own. A Monthly Practice for Professional Development Consultants are extremely busy, so if all of this has to be reduced to a single habit, it's this: block one afternoon a month, the same way you'd allocate time for a client call, and use it to close a specific gap rather than to read about SAP in general terms. Open a BTP trial account and build something small against a capability you know you're weak on, then check what SAP Community's Q&A traffic says people are actually stuck on this month, since that tells you about where the field is moving. Finish by writing yourself one paragraph about a recent project decision and why you made it that way instead of the alternative you didn't take; five years of those paragraphs becomes a developing record of judgment that can be referred to or even directly presented to a client or hiring manager. Each of those actions is small. Kept up according to a monthly schedule over years, then together they become the actual, demonstrable difference between a consultant with a real answer to how they've stayed current, and one who insists they have “stayed curious”.
